On August 26, 2024, in an interview with CTV News,  Immigration Minister Marc Miller hinted at significant changes to Canada’s permanent immigration levels.  Some key changes to look out for:

  1. Adjustments to Immigration Levels: The upcoming Immigration Levels Plan may include revisions to the number of permanent residents Canada aims to welcome. These changes could involve reducing or rebalancing the types of immigration streams, particularly in response to public concerns about housing and affordability.

  2. Revisions to the International Student Program: Minister Miller mentioned that further adjustments to the International Student Program are in the works, which could impact the number of study permits issued and the criteria for international students coming to Canada.

  3. New Policies for Temporary Residents: There may be new measures to manage the number of temporary residents, such as those on work permits, study permits, and visitor visas. This could involve further limitations on temporary foreign workers in certain areas and possibly more domestic-focused permanent residence draws.

  4. Announcements in the Fall: The Minister indicated that some of these changes and measures will be formally announced in the fall, signaling a period of significant policy updates.
