The question always arises, "if I have a low CRS score, should I enter the Express Entry pool?" There are many reasons why a low CRS score should not discourage you from submitting an Express Entry profile.

The Express Entry pool is comprised of candidates from three federal skilled worker immigration programs:

  • The Federal Skilled Worker program,
  • The Federal Skilled Trades program
  • The Canadian Experience Class program.

Once you submit your profile and enter the pool, you receive a score based on the following factors:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Skilled Work Experience
  • Proficiency in English or French

Based on the above factors, you will receive a score and will be ranked. Your score will determine your ranking and your chances of being invited to apply for permanent residence in Canada.

If you meet the criteria, entering the Express Entry pool is a definite advantage for many reasons:

  • CRS scores are constantly changing. What you may think is a low CRS score may eventually provide you with an Invitation to Apply for permanent residency.

  • After entering the express entry pool, while you are waiting for your invitation to apply for permanent residency, you can work on improving your CRS score by either retaking your language test, gaining work experience, pursuing additional training or working and studying in Canada.

  • If you are offered a job in Canada while you are in the pool, your CRS score may also increase enough for you to receive an Invitation to apply for permanent residency.

  • While you are in the pool, you may receive a nomination from a province. The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allows participating Canadian provinces and territories to nominate foreign workers and international graduates for permanent residence in Canada. Getting a nomination from a province is an excellent option as you will automatically receive 600 points which can be applied towards your CRS score and essentially guarantee you an invitation to apply for permanent residency.

The Canadian government has set the highest immigration targets in its history for the next three years. Under its 2021-2023 immigration levels plan, Canada aims to welcome over 400,000 new immigrants per year. 110,000 immigrations are set to arrive through the Express Entry program. In 2023, the target is expected to increase to 113,750. For Canada to meet these targets, a large number of Express Entry invitations will need to be issued, thus potentially resulting in lower CRS scores in future draws.

So, if you are considering immigrating to Canada, you may want to consider entering the Express Entry pool even if you have a low CRS score.
